Behind the Scenes Video of how we built it: uzmilk.info/number/fJxmqGmalmmJhaU/video.html
⇊ Click below for more links! ⇊

I have been wanting to build this thing as long as I understood the physics of how it all works. A super big thanks to David Linderman, Jeremy Fielding, Trent, and David Woodall (the welder).

I realize most people who support Smarter Every Day don't do it for "transactional" reasons, (ie, I'll support Smarter Every Day to get stuff). I also realized that there is often a mental hurdle that must be crossed before support on Patreon starts. My thought is that I'd really like to give folks a baseball, and it might provide enough momentum to get over that initial hurdle. I signed the first shipment of baseballs I received, but I only have so many of those. There's no implication that my signature is worth anything.... it's just kind of what you do with baseballs... it's a tradition. After a certain number, it will transition to unsigned baseballs. I've got enough signed baseballs to over all existing Patrons, and many more, but I will wait a month or so to see how many I need to get, then I'll order the second batch. I like to support jobs and pay people for what they're good at. The machinists and welders who made the parts in this video for example. The whole intent here is to diversify away from solely being ad sponsored so I don't have to answer to anyone but myself and Patrons with respect to the types of content I choose to make. Thank you for understanding what I'm doing here, and even if you decide not to kick in at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday , I'm super grateful you took the time to watch this video!
Thank you very much,

I have a question you made a high speed batting system rotate to hit balls fathers he made a air cannon that shoots a baseball past the speed of sound have you ever thought about putting the two together to see if which goes first the ball gets broke hit in the back or the bad kids broke hitting the ball that is my question am I challenge

Destin, your 2-D drawing at 2:48 shows a critical flow venturi in the barrel, but your SolidWorks render at 3:33 does not show the CFV. Was there in fact a CFV in the finished machine? It seems like the tank + barrel by themselves would form a CFV with an exit-to-throat ratio of 1, making it impossible to achieve supersonic velocity unless you stick a CFV in there - but may be I'm missing something

The friction from the barrel needs to be taken to account for the initial unraveling of the stitching from the baseball. Maybe some lube or lube wad that is used in black powder gun would remove this variable.

You should make a video where you add a ton of spin to the ball and see what kind of crazy curveballs/sliders you could throw (probably at a slightly slower speed). with all the talk of spin rate on pitches, it'd be interesting to see some actual data on it.

I almost forgot ... can you change that backstop to something that can catch the baseball??? Kevlar sheets .... string it up with some kind of spring mounting system that will help to catch it with minimal damage to the baseball just to see if the cover is being torn off in flight??? Mabey?? Great work men 👏 👍 👌.

Thanks for doing this experiment!!!! HAHA yeah 🤣 😆... I'm a big fan of this kind of thinking 😄... SOOOO now.. find an area that is flat to see how far it can travel under different elevations.... AND HOW HIGH UP the baseball can go.... paint with some glowing material to follow the flight....haha 😄 🤣!! OK 👌..... 👌. This has me going crazy with all the possibilities 🤣 😜.... WELL DONE MEN OF SCIENCE!!!! WELL DONE 👏 ✔ 👍 👌 😀.

Not accounting for rotational drag or air resistance, if this was launched perfectly vertical, the ball could (theoretically) reach 11,200 meters (almost 7 miles) high. Initial velocity of 469 m/sec, height of 7 meters and assuming constant -9.8 m/sec^2 at all times (big assumptions, I know)

I got a question ok I’m not sure if it works with aerodynamics but here ya go, When I was playing baseball with friends we were doing under hands. And my friend was a pitcher and my friend swung upwards and it hit my friends stomach. How is it possible to get it to my friends stomach? My guess is that when he swung the ball was already going behind his body so when he swung and hit the ball that caused it to go head to knees height and not over head height. So that forced the ball to go to his Stomach. Note: I have no experience in aerodynamics/physics
