I don't know why... but this was one of my favorite videos from the Deep Dive Series. It's so... personal and real. I had no idea that food is literally THE limiting factor on a submarine's ability to dive. Also, I had no idea meals were such a big deal for morale (Ice Cream on Waffles totally works by the way). I have an email list here if you'd like to get an email when I upload a video: Thank you to those who have recently chosen to support Smarter Every Day on Patreon ( ) . You're awesome, and I hope you have received your baseball! I've been seeing a lot of posts on twitter of people showing me photos of their baseball and it's awesome!! If you have not received your yet, please check for status updates! I'm grateful for your support and hope you really enjoy this one. The next video is both amazing certifiably insane, so please look forward to that! Regards, Destin

I think this one was so relatable because food is one of those things that I think is a universal experience. Not everyone has to deal with emergency fire preparedness on a daily basis, but we all have experiences trying to come up with something to cook for dinner. I've made pizza from scratch a number of times but never under such constraints, it's truly impressive (and much easier to contextualize) how skilled these guys are because of that relatable experience.

It makes perfect sense that food would be a big deal for morale. They live in a basement and sleep in a closet for 6 months at a time, with no internet access, no privacy, no sunlight, and no girlfriends. Discipline can get them through their work hours, but they need to have _something_ to look forward to when their shift ends. If I were in that situation I'd be constantly torn between eating as fast and as much as I could, vs. eating as slowly as I could and trying to extract maximum flavor from each bite.

    • DJ Drack
      DJ Drack

It is a great video and makes sense when you think about it. Limited space = limited space for food. The minute food replicators become a thing is a tragic day for submarine crews, as they could be underwater for years lol

    • Beth Krager
      Beth Krager

@rami almajdalawi time. Honestly it's time taken away from the mission. Im assuming you mean fishing and not fish as a meal. They serve a not bad crusted fish on some ships. I've had it. Nothing is better than Christmas or thanksgiving dinner. The CS's go HARD on those meals because it is important for morale.

0:05 lol you can see the 12 tomahawk cruise missile launch tubes in the front, top room behind the sonar. I find it funny how they don't mention the fact that this thing can carry 12 of the most powerful cruise missiles on the planet

Something I learned very quick in my 20 year career in the military is make friends with your cooks and make sure they are taken care of. In turn they made sure I was taken care of while deployed with cases of everything I loved. I grilled every Friday for my guys as a moral booster with steaks, pork and chicken supplied by them.

  • Asher Pfanku

I guess this is to be expected. Good quality, diverse food has a pretty significant impact on morale. And morale is probably most necessary deep under the ocean, when you might not see daylight for weeks, and you're walking around in tight corridors every day.

  • MrBabylon

If any branch of the armed forces deserve good food is these guy. No matter which country they're from Submariners are a breed apart, the mental discipline required to live in what is essentially a metal coffin for months on end and still come out sane is truly remarkable, especially when you consider many people couldn't even spend the same amount of time in their homes during lockdown! respect to all submariners!

  • Paid'nGames

4 people got a 8 person pizza and two bowls of poppers and mozzarella sticks lol

  • Loykaz

I actually though the military would be given healthy foods for obvious reasons, but then, I guess your moral and mental state is as important if not more down on a sub maybe than psyical, awesome vid

So they can make oxygen so it’s ok to cook normally on the sub, but how do they get rid of cooking smells? Is there an engineering solution for strong cooking odors? Or is there a constant smell of pizza in the submarine?

Meals are one of the few ways we had in the Navy to think of the passage of time. Taco Tuesdays, Burger Wednesdays, Pizza Fridays(or Saturdays). One time the cooks on our ship made tacos on Monday and you'd be surprised how angry people got over changing the schedule. You don't mess with a Sailor's routine!

It was well known when I was in the Navy that Sub sailors ate the best. I was never stationed on one, but I was on dive teams that tended them in the Indian Ocean in the 80's. Those men really sacrifice for their country & deserve the best.
