Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience.

Another note: The Navy did not ask me to provide a link to their website (or do anything for that matter), but I’m going to provide a link because I want smart people to become submariners. The US Navy continues to provide stability and security in ways no other organization on earth does. If you are interested to find out how you can join the Navy you can visit the website here:

There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:

The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meet who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch.

Fire onboard a submarine is a big deal:

A huge thanks to the Navy for letting me film the series on board the USS Toledo. Matt did a great job of explaining how they handle fire and flooding on board. I just wanted to give a healthy shout out to everyone out there who should have recently received a Smarter Every Day baseball ⚾️ for supporting on Patreon. If you haven’t received a baseball yet, it is not too late. I made this page to explain the process:

The place I work actually makes those solid oxygen canisters. I took a temp job that was only supposed to take a week or two a couple years ago to package them up for shipment and wound up getting picked up full time (doing something else). We come across those cans all over the place, a few people use the empty ones as vases or little storage containers for random tools and office supplies. I think those things are super freaking cool, I wish I had an opportunity to set one off. Well, OK, an opportunity that didn't involve me being in a sinking submarine or trapped in a mine, of course!

I can see the tension when the CO is watching a fire drill ready to pounce when he see any mistakes. Dont know how the ratings can hold a poker face.

  • Shirokuma

I wonder why they use CO2 extinguishers instead of foam? Isn’t the sudden addition of CO2 gas (even more then what the fire creates) dangerous on a submarine? Isn’t foam better for general fires and electrical fires

  • jim2386

Amazing stuff. Only thing I’m still curious about is what if it’s not a pipe leak, but a hill leak. Is it all doomed if a hill leak happens?

That low battery 🔋 on the thermal imager is a HUGE fault in the response team. That equipment is a single point of failure for the fire fighting. If it dies mid fire, what are the implications? Seems like it should be charged and checked every shift to make sure it is charged.

  • Tamal Paul
    Tamal Paul

Why no sprinkler system? Seems that the fire hose will splash around a lot more water than a directed sprinkler nozzle. Also, that procedure is very well thought out and coordinated, but in being so it has a major flaw : multiple fires. How do they deal with that?
