Happy New Year! There's a lot more to explore here. For example, the coefficient of restitution! If you work for the MLB and would consider letting me in on some baseball science I'd be game. P.S. Besides the obvious answer of Cal Ripken Jr., who was your favorite baseball player as a kid? Also, thank you to everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I really appreciate it.

@Peter Carlson @SmarterEveryDay please listen to this guy. This was a deadly dangerous machine, and especially given the fact that 18 million people have watched this, I think you have a responsibility to acknowledge that the safety precautions here were not remotely adequate, and make sure you do some engineering on them next time. There was never a chance that your reaction time could have been quick enough to get out of the way, and I'm quite confident that the unsecured, improvised metal grating there would also not have been sufficient to prevent serious injury. Apart from that (major!) concern, this was a really great video, and a lot of fun to watch. But safety is a critical part of good engineering!!

For the record, no player has ever hit a 550+ ft HR. Even in denver. People just didn't understand that balls fall far far quicker than they rise, so they seriously overestimated the distance. Mantle and Ruth were probably 510-515, and Meyer was *maybe* 535-540.
